Mail work in 1065

June 22, 2011 · by Rijk

The announcement of build 1065 doesn't say much about the changes that went into the mail client, apart from 'some fixes', so I thought I would expand a little bit on it. Read on smile

Build 1065 improves upon the Gmail IMAP support that went into Opera 11.10. To solve overzealous spam detection on newly added Gmail accounts, Opera now disables its own spam filter by default for Gmail IMAP accounts. This can be set for other IMAP accounts with a Spam folder as well. Messages moved in or out of the Spam folder will be given an IMAP keyword (we add $NotJunk or $Junk which seems to be official, and recognize a few more). This will also help prevent a spam marking loop when multiple clients with differently tuned spam filters are using the same IMAP account... Furthermore Opera now hides duplicated messages in Label and Mailing list views. 'Show duplicates' is a new option that can be set for any mail view.

Build 1065 also adds support for setting designated 'Trash' and 'Spam' folders for IMAP servers that don't support the X-LIST or Special-Use IMAP extensions, that is, all other IMAP servers apart from Fastmail and Gmail. And the IMAP Sent folder you could already set, will now sport a real 'To' column, so it can be sorted on recipient.

A last new feature to mention is the addition of a 'Match messages in' setting that can be set on any label with filter rules. If you save a mail search inside a specific mail view (so it becomes a label with a filter rule), the proper 'match' setting will be added automatically. This can be used to mimic the pre-Opera 11 'limit filter to parent' option, but allows for much more flexibility in limiting label filters to, for example, a single account, or to feed articles only, etc.

It is still a bug... since Tuesday even! Use the Wand button for now, or make sure the focus isn't inside a form field before pressing Ctrl+Enter...

Afaik Fastmail uses Cyrus as IMAP server. Did Opera modify it somehow to use these additions? Else it should be possible to support them on any Cyrus server (like mine) ...

HOLY CRAP! I CAN FINALLY RIGHT CLICK ON THE BOOKMARKS WITHOUT HAVING TO USE THE BOOKMARKS PANE!!!!

    When was this added?

    I think I'm in love.
  • Stevesgunhouse23. June 2011, 03:01

And the IMAP Sent folder you could already set, will now sport a real 'From' column, so it can be sorted on 'sender'.

I presume that's "To" and "Recipient", yes?
  • drworm23. June 2011, 04:15

So that's why "limit filter to parent" disappeared. What a nice surprise smile I feared it wasn't going to make it back for this version. I'm going to really appreciate the capabilities it offers.
  • Firefly7494023. June 2011, 04:36

With this i will use opera mail again ! bigsmile
  • cvm23. June 2011, 06:42

Great mail fixes but I must stay with Opera 10.63 because Opera 11.xx missing progress/status icon in mail folder.
When you use mobile internet, you don`t know actual status of mail folder.
  • aplan23. June 2011, 08:06

    Thanks!

Is any way to synchronize user's Labels? In what file on disk they are saved?

I alway use clean install for every build and I use IMAP. Sure, I can copy 'mail' folder to new installation, but it is not clean. Is it really to add such feature to Link?
  • Burov Dmitrythe-Arioch23. June 2011, 08:11

Yandex.ru aka Ya.ru aka Narod.ru aka few more domains
#1 search and context ad portal in Russia

IMAP/TLS still is broken after few years already :-/

I'm not sure how far spread the use of the Special-Use IMAP extension is right now. The Fastmail guys are involved in the Cyrus OS project.

If you use IMAP, you can add an IMAP keyword in the Labels properties dialog. Those keywords get stored on the server together with the messages. Other Opera instances will see that keyowrd and automatically make it into a new label. To keep things sane, it is best to have a one-on-one relationship between label and keyword: don't use the same keyword on multiple labels. Note that label filter rules will not get synced this way.

The properties of the labels are stored in index.ini, the information on which messages have those labels is stored in omailbase.dat. You should not try to copy these around, it is best to only copy complete mail folders.

If you don't change the default settings of the label, the label doesn't contain any spaces in its name, the label doesn't have any rules and your IMAP server supports keywords, you can go into the label's properties and set an IMAP keyword to match the name of the label (case-sensitive). Then, the label and the messages in it will sync across all your Operas (and other clients that support IMAP keywords).

Any chance for this getting fixed before the final:
    1. Shift + Right click-Paste&Go doesn't work.
    2. Shift + Enter doesn't work in speed dial tab.

Also, disabling animations doesn't disable speed dial animations, which are very CPU intensive, reordering at least.

I think you have to download the cert file from the server and import it via "Ctrl + F12 -> advanced -> security -> manage certificates -> approved -> import". Then, I think Opera won't bother you. If Opera still bothers you though, I bet you it's by design and you'll just have to use another mail client.

"To solve overzealous spam detection on newly added Gmail accounts"

Would this explain why build 1054 completely ruined my gmail account? It put all my messages into gmail's spam folder but extracting them meant they went into inbox where previously they were archived! argh.

Worse though, all my Drafts are no longer drafts and there's no way to put them back.

Not sure yet what else it broke! Is all that solved in this build?

(Now I'm not sure I will ever be able to trust an IMAP client to connect to my gmail just in case a seemingly-read-only action can ruin my mailbox)

The password manager does not work anymore, I guess since build 1054

    XPSP3, B1065

    Can anyone confirm?

Er, yes. Hence the fixes we've been working on. Not sure about drafts though, Opera Mail doesn't support IMAP Draft folders yet, but it also shouldn't do anything special with them.

Any chance of getting text to wrap properly in the viewing pane? It does in the reply box. Still on 10.10 because of this.
  • Charlie ClarkMuzzlehatch23. June 2011, 11:00

Thanks very much for the explanation Rijk. It's nice to see 11.5 getting more than a fancy new "home screen", which is what speed dial seems to be becoming (and this probably makes sense on a lot of devices). Keep up the good work.

    Regression in Proxy settings:

Use proxy for all protocols button is not functioning properply.
when i add new proxy to http, I had to uncheck and check "Use proxy for all protocols" to work properly. otherwise new proxy addedd does not work for https and ftp protocol.

It is wrapping properly, at the window edge when the message is sent as 'format-flowed'.

No, the update server is usually lagging a bit or can skip some builds.

Why not set it you're self.

I think I've found a bug with the label options.

A couple of labels I had set have disappeared, and because they were set to hide mail from other views, the messages assigned to those labels have gone with it.

I know the mail would technically still exist, I've just lost my view to them.

I've described the issue in detail at http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=1026072&t=1308867557&page=1#comment9712072

Any assistance to get my view to them back would be hugely appreciated. I've upgraded to 1067, but they are still missing.

It is a problem, but not our biggest priority now. I usually either select a single line to reply to, or don't select anything to quote all (and edit afterwards).

Quoting selected text is my biggest annoyance with Opera smile My drafts folder is overflowing with abandoned emails because I had thoughtless selected some text before replying. Out of habit I always mark some text as I read. I wish quoting was an option that could be turned off. I know I can create a button to deselect text before triggering a reply.

smile It would be much nicer, user-wise, if it were. Make it public at least in part. You would still have no contractually binding obligation, but it would make the Opera devel process much more transparent towards users. Anyways, off-topic..
