This is my browser

May 5, 2011 · by Aleksander Aas

Last night, I emailed a screenshot of my Opera browser to a friend. He's a new Opera user, so he got instantly excited about all the small changes I had done to modify the UI of Opera. At home I run Windows 7 with Z1-Glass, and the status bar replaced with the awesome Popup Statusbar.

Aleksander Opera

At work I use a Mac (see screenshot above). All of this got me thinking: How does your Opera look like? Do you use any modified appearance or do you run a clean install? Post a picture of how your browser looks like in the comments below! Also remember to check out the "How does your Opera look?" forum thread. Woop woop!

All toolbars turned off except tab bar (No O Menu button & button to toggle content blocker before closed tabs button)

Panel toggle at the left edge of the window.

My Opera browser looks pretty boring since it almost uses all the default settings (which I prefer a lot, so kudos for that), but here is a screenshot:

This is mine - I tend to get rid of a lot of stuff I don't need.
I've also customised all the right-click menus to remove choices I'll never make.

The extension bar is a bit... ugly, but that's the only way I found how to add those buttons.

I have only the Main and Tab bars showing, and lots of custom buttons both of websites and from operawiki.info (as well as the Breeze skin from there).

I just downloaded the Z1-Glass skin the author (Aleksander Aas) suggested, but normally, I just stick to the default skin with a alternate color choice as the skin fits perfectly and is easy to see/use...

The reason for this is because to date, I have not found a skin I really like, nothing that jumps out at me and says "you HAVE to download this".

Whilst I'm sure there are a couple of reasons Opera skins are so rare in comparison to other software, part of the problem is (in my opinion) the difficulty in creating a skin- I WAS going to create my own skin and nearly fell off the seat when I discovered the amount of effort involved!

What Opera Software need to do is simplify the process for creating a skin and the best way to do this would be offering a "wizard", allowing newcomers to create custom skins quickly and easily...

Do that and I am confident that the availability of skins will increase ten-fold (heck, I know I would be developing at least a dozen or so skins)!

I've really come to like tabs on the side. I use the RedEvil skin and switch out the color scheme from time to time, but that's pretty much it.
  • MerijnThursday, May 5, 2011 12:52:15 PM

Running the latest weekly. No extensions, tab buttons at the bottom (have been since v3.6), one window on each of my 2 screens. Left window has sidebar open, on the Bookmarks tab. Minimal toolbar and native Windows skin.

    It FLIES.

Awesome guys! I'll upload one from home as soon as I get back. When checking out the links here you should have a look at this awesome extension EspenAO had:

Usually, I do four things after install
    1) Change Skin size to "70%" or "80%"
    2) Replace Search input next to address bar with "Go" button
    3) Check "Show panel toggle at edge of window" and remove the button to toggle the panels.
    4) Remove "Menu" text from O-Menu button

Otherwise, I'm happy with default setup

For my main Opera window I use window layout features (in fact, the screenshot is old, now I use a 5-window layout):

    http://my.opera.com/andreiolaru/albums/showpic.dml?album=7104342&picture=106565082

For my work sessions, I use tab stacking:

only custumization i'v made is removed bottom bar... love the extra space

  • MoosatovThursday, May 5, 2011 1:09:48 PM

Andrei, what skin do you use?
  • MariThursday, May 5, 2011 1:11:18 PM

Mine is pretty simple, but that's how I like it:

    Fullsize: http://cl.ly/1m2F0M0O2s2T1C17252y

I often found myself wanting more screen real estate height-wise, so I removed the status bar and tab bar, and I've enabled showing miniature photos of tabs when alt-tabbing between tabs, as well as cmd+shift+p to show or hide the Windows panel on the right. The red star next to the address bar is bookmarking on delicious, the rest is standard buttons that I've just moved around. I'm using a clean version of a standard theme, I think.

Nothing special here. This is 11.50 (1009) using the standard skin (a little modded, though). I got used to have the panel toggle on the left (it is so since Opera 9), so no need for that button in the statusbar head (moreover, I've got a hot corner, a frequently used button won't be okay there). Apart from that, I don't use Turbo, therefore only Opera Link and Unite are still there. On the right, that little arrow next to the clock toggles the extensions bar (which is actually up, on the left of the trash). Other than that, I think it's clear.
Speaking of the Speed Dial, I really love the now native support for renaming my stuff.
On the negative side, Opera Portal looks utterly ugly this way, My Opera and the forums are also somewhat plain and inconsistent with the rest of the thumbnails.

By the way, does somebody know how to slim down the address bar? It went this fat when I dragged the trash to it - I don't like it being on the tab bar.
P.S. found it: top and bottom paddings under [Addressbar Transparent Skin] (as opposed to [Addressbar Skin], which I tried to modify before).

I don't use any mods because I'M TIRED OF OPERA DISABILITY TO PROPERLY UPGRADE AFTER HEAVY MODS. So I use defaults for a few years now. And this is very sad...

Does anyone actually use the status bar? I've got the view button between the adress and search bars for zooming/fitting the page plus Instapaper and Yandex extensions on the left. The skin is "10.6 Clean version".

Clean and simple. Using a variation of the default skin.

    1. Don't like how the O menu looks on non-windows systems, so I messed with the theme.
    2. Status bar is gone, put what I use on the address bar/tab bar.
3, Speed dial = total hawtness,
