What a Year!

December 31, 2010 · by .ed

As the new year comes sneaking in, we would like to use this day to summarize how wild this year has been. Thanks to your support, we've had amazing success in our product launches and an unprecedented growth. Let's look back at some of the things that happened in 2010.

Opera Mini & Opera Mobile

Opera Mini tops App Store charts

Starting off with mobile, we can't miss out on the announcement that Opera Mini was coming for the iPhone. After we had submitted the popular browser to the App Store we followed up with the iPhone Countup campaign (the original title for this campaign was "The Final Countup" - Europe anyone?). When Opera Mini was approved for the iPhone, it broke all download records with more than 1 million downloads the first 24 hours - making it the number one downloaded application worldwide. To this date, this is one of our most successful (viral) launches ever and would not have been made possible without your help and support.

Opera Mini 5 was later developed and deployed across all platforms. Opera Mobile 10 also became a reality this year; even on Android devices. Both can be set to be your default browser on the Android devices! Clearly the best feature on Android!

The Android launch was was accompanied with a pretty wallpaper competition.

FastMail & AdMarvel

FastMail

Besides developing new products for the mobile scene, we also found time to acquire FastMail.FM. We have a lot in store for 2011 when it comes to mail and we are all looking forward to finally being able to provide all of you with a state of the art email solution.

Opera also aquired AdMarvel this year, which will soon offer interesting opportunities for content publishers. And, our own staff grew, there are many new Opera employees around the globe, like me! :hi:

My Opera received some visual and backend updates so you can keep blogging and uploading photos from your mobile devices.

OMG HTML5 IS HERE NAO

Biolab Disaster

Web technology with HTML5 and CSS3 became the buzz word to market in 2010 for major browser vendors. Some of the most important updates included a large scale deployment of the video tag. A lot of cool things was also done with Canvas. The Biolabs Disaster game is a good example of that. Our Developer Relations team did an excellent job frequently updating their blog.

Meet Opera 11

Opera 11

In the desktop market we did three major releases in 2010. We kicked it off with Opera 10.50, faster than any potato. The 10 series ended in 2010 with the release of Opera 11. Opera 11 broke all our previous download records. With extensions and an updated tab stacking feature, the stage is now set for amazing features and innovation in 2011.

P.S.: I'm interested in developing a narwhal translator myself, but others have created some far more useful extensions. Let me know if you want to join in on the project.

150 million users - Jon's email inbox exposed!

Back in April, we peaked 100 million users. Less than six months later, we saw a staggering 150 million Opera users. We recommend you check out Jon's inbox which was made publicly open to announce our 150 million users record.

You guys just keeps on giving

The most important thing this year was the amazing support we got from all of you. Your feedback and support here, on Facebook:up: , TwitterFollow opera on Twitter, and in comments we find all around the web have driven us to keep innovating. Thanks for recommending Opera to your friends and family.

Happy new year everyone. We have a lot in store for you in 2011!

As we would say on N+:

    New Year Happen.

It's been a great year for us Opera users. Hopefully next year will be even better. The best part of 2010 was that DotEd was hired by Opera!

I don't think it was intended to have immediate success, more of a long term thing.

What are you specifically referring to? Lack of use(rs) or feature improvements? If you have anything in particular you want improved or fixed, then feel free to contact the moderators in the Opera Unite group.

The only thing I do not like of this 2010 was the change made you to My Opera that brought many bugs :bug: but the rest of changes if I like it.

I don't really see UNITE as "epic failure", it maybe just meet your needs thou....
Look at the bright side: UNITE made the Opera a unique browser, maybe could be called "community envolved browser", if, of course, you join in an active community.
Anyway, I joined in a small private community, using all the features of the UNITE to discuss about PS3 games, consoles and products. It's been quite a usefull tool in this way. Could be replaced by other internet tool? Maybe. Do we need to look for? No.
    :spock:
  • MConorFriday, December 31, 2010 11:19:05 PM

Opera has always been a community involved browser. That's why this is here.

    I use opera unite.

Not all the time, of course, but it beats the shit out of having to upload a file to a filehost or sending it through slow servers like msn or any other file transfer thing. If you need to send a file to someone, you need to upload it anyway. Why not upload it directly - at full speed - to the person that you want to send the file to?

The main reason why opera unite isn't that popular is probably because people don't know about it. It's like mouse gestures, a lot of people couldn't be bothered 'learning' how to use them, but now they're like "hey this is actually pretty easy!" because of the visual mouse gestures UI.

Opera Unite is great. It's a beautiful addition to the opera internet suite.
  • Ahmed GhanemSaturday, January 1, 2011 3:28:54 PM

Opera Unite is epic to say the least, my laptop has only a 320GB hard drive and I can't waste it on my music collection so I always stream it using Opera Unite.... also File Sharing through Unite is the best... epic failure here applies if you never even bothered to use Unite and see its awesomeness.
  • Adonis @ my.opera /friendspartyworldSunday, January 2, 2011 1:36:45 AM

unite an epic failure? I havenot yet used it but i believe that i will the moment i can. I think a fast connection is needed and i hope to use it with wifi on android but is it working on a mobile and through wifi? The mobile i use now is a poor thing and a not so cheap one. I would like to be able even now to use it with an unite connection of some elses computer to listen music he i could and not the unusable youtube.
  • Adonis @ my.opera /friendspartyworldSunday, January 2, 2011 1:49:08 AM

    Edit: he:> if
edit: In fact i can use youtube to sent it to facebook and listen/see it somewhere else. But not see/listen to it in real time. And not see/listen everything offcourse. At my opera i miss my avatarphoto in the first heading of the page. I really do and if i put images off it is not a nice headigog too. Ok for this/that now.
  • PatataSunday, January 2, 2011 2:10:30 AM

Android isn't the only mobile OS that allows to set Opera as default. Symbian^3 has that feature too.
I hope that Opera won't forget Symbian while they focus on the usual hyped US plattforms (iOS and Android)
While the N8 for example is a great device, its browser is really bad. Opera has the chance to provide a better browser for a system that really.needs it. Opera Mobile for N8 is good but could be much better.

And last but not least: Opera and Nokia are in a similar situation regarding the fact that they are often overlooked just cause they got no US roots
