A Week of Opera: Week 10, 2011, and then some

March 14, 2011 · by Haavard

It's been a while since the last "Week of Opera". It turns out that these weekly updates on what's happening at Opera were rather popular, so I've decided to give this another try. I can't promise that I'll write an update every week, but I'll certainly try to get it done every now and then.

With that out of the way, let's get to the actual update! It will not be limited to week 10, but will contain a few other things that have been going on in the previous weeks as well.

  • An important milestone was reached in January: More than 100 million people used Opera Mini and Opera Mobile.
  • It's official: Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11 will be the next versions of our mobile browsers.
  • Opera Mini is coming for the iPad.
  • Opera Mobile Store launched: Featured on the Speed Dial of more than 100 million mobile Opera users and powered by Appia, it attracted more than 15 million users in February, and had more than 700000 daily downloads.
  • The Opera Mobile Store signals Opera's expansion into services, writes The Register. It is an "open" App Store not limited to a single platform, just like Opera itself is platform-agnostic. It also works with any browser, not just Opera.
  • The Publisher Portal lets you distribute your apps through the Opera Mobile Store, and reach more than 100 million users.
  • Opera Mini was booted from the GetJar mobile application store due to the link to the Opera Mobile Store in Speed Dial.
  • Opera Mini will ship on Qualcomm's Brew Mobile Platform.
  • Want to develop cross-platform applications using open web standards? Opera brings you WAC support already now.
  • Opera and Telling to establish joint venture in China: Telling is one of the largest mobile phone distributors in China, distributing between 40-50 million mobile phones each year. It has more than 40 000 retailing outlets across the country. The joint venture is expected to lead to a boost in Opera's presence in China, helped by Telling's distribution power.
  • Opera will be on future Sony TVs and Blu-ray players.
  • Other recent deals: INQ in Britain, MTS Russia, Chunghwa Telecom (the largest telecommunications company in Taiwan), and Bess Mobile (first OEM in Latin America to preinstall Opera Mini).

Nice! Don't know if I missed it somewhere else, but this is the first confirmation I've seen that WebP support will be official.
