Actually Opera was rather simple back in the stick and stones days. And it has gained new stuff along the way, or as the original poster said, "never ending path to bloat".
Even the first public version of Opera did mail and newsgroups, and of course the UI was much more cluttered and complicated than today. So again, you are talking nonsense.
And Opera is not going to turn into Qt. Forget about it. If you want a UI framework, feel free to use Qt. Don't demand that Opera follow your nerdy inclinations. People don't want to write their own browser.
The bottom line: Opera has always had lots of features, and that is not going to change any time soon.

No, you're talking rubbish. The Opera in the past was rather simple and much simpler than todays Opera. You can't deny that. If you will, you'd be saying that Opera has not grown and not have added features.

Will the features currently bundled with Opera, like torrent client, email or Opera Unite be available as extensions in Opera 11, or will they still be an integrated part of the browser? I would prefer the former, though I am but one voice here.

YAY I don't recall being so enthusiastic about a software product as I am when talking about Opera. It's about time for this though. I assume that adding extensions it's a response to the fact that everybody keeps comparing Opera to FF and this is what FF always had and Opera didn't. Also since Chrome implemented this feature it gained a huge boost(even though I don't understand what ppl see in that browser:|). It's not that most users need extensions now. Also I don't think Opera team can add all those features requested by users, not as fast as they want anyway. So adding extensions it's a good idea. I still have the feeling that in time many of those features implemented by extensions will be added by Opera team ) However, as you might already noticed some users here don't need(not WANT - it's a huge difference) extensions(right now I am one of them) so I hope that Opera will remain as it is now if the extensions are added. I'm saying this because I hope that some Opera features(like Unite, torrent client, email client etc) won't be transformed into extensions. Also, from my previous experience with FF I can say that extensions increase resources usage exponential and also affect performance. Right now when I'm righting this I have 116 tabs opened and `1-1.2 Gb RAM usage. I don't think FF could handle these much(actually it never handled more than 40 tabs for me for that it's always crashing) with only 1GB RAM. It never did for me in every single test I made. I really hope this goes out just fine because like some users already said, if something goes wrong those using extensions won't blame the extension dev or themselves but Opera Team.

for some of the functions we want in a browser, we have some already in opera, some settings changes, custom buttons, bookmark buttons, userscripts and unite. UJS Manager makes installing userscripts as easy as greasemonkey, but only after setting up the userscripts folder and telling UJS Manager where it is. this needs to be as easy as installing skins, widgets and unite apps.
will spyware start invading some people's opera install with toolbars and search hijacks? IE has had it a lot. Firefox as well to some extent. well, at least not on my system

If something is added and you don't notice it at all, it's idiocy to call it "bloat". The UI is DIRECTLY relevant.
The fact is that Opera was much more cluttered in earlier versions. You know, the ones you claim to have been "bloat-free" even though even the first public version did mail and newsgroups.

I'm not so sure to like this, I always saw the lack of Firefox-like addons as a feature, ensuring stability and coherence in the UI, leaving the extraordinary features to widgets (I loved when they started to run outside the browser).
On the other side, many people, including myself, have always complained about the lack of support from Opera as a company on UserJS, as many of them are quite powerful but unpopular due to their lack of accessibility (in a time where people won't bother to use anything that requires more than 2 clicks to be set up). Reading from comments above, if Extensions will allow to import UserJS maybe this IS the support that UserJS users were waiting for all this time: I really hope so.

Extensions are using the same packaging as widgets. Did merely having the widget framework there slow down Opera? Nope.
