Windows
These settings change the behavior and appearance of page tabs and application windows.
Window handling
By default, when you open new pages, they will open within one Opera application window. Multiple open pages are visible as tabs on the page bar. In the first run start-up dialog, you get the choice between this and two other settings:
- If you prefer to open a new application window with each new page, select "Prefer separate windows".
- If you want Opera to display a Window menu, minimize/maximixe/close buttons on the menu bar, and not put a close button on each tab, opt for "Advanced Opera workspace".
You can change this setting at any time in the "Windows" preferences.
Pop-ups
On some Web sites, new pages or windows are generated automatically by the site. If you want to allow this, select "Open all pop-ups", or opt to "Open all pop-ups in background" if you do not want these new pages to interrupt your browsing, but still want them to open.
A lot of users prefer to block pop-ups because they are intrusive and often contain little besides advertising. However, you will encounter Web sites that rely on pop-ups for functionality such as log-in forms. If you choose to block unwanted pop-ups only, Opera will try to distinguish pop-ups requested by you from pop-ups that are generated automatically.
To easily change this setting while surfing, press F12 and edit the Quick preferences.
Scrolling options
The scroll bar is normally placed on the right side of the screen, indicating the length of the current document and your current position within it. You may scroll the document by clicking on the arrows in either end of the scroll bar. If you prefer not to see the scroll bar, uncheck this option.
Advanced
Cycle pages
By holding the Ctrl key and repeatedly pressing Tab, you can cycle through all the pages you have open within the Opera workspace. This setting allows you to choose what order the pages should be cycled in, and whether you want to see the list of open pages while you are cycling through them.
Loading and new pages
Do you want Opera to try to display a document as soon as it starts loading, or do you prefer to wait until the whole document is loaded before displaying it? Set your preference under "Loading".
"New pages" lets you decide how much size a new page should take up when opened. If you always want to use the whole workspace for viewing pages, choose "Always maximize".
Reuse existing page
When you open an item from the panels, such as a bookmark, would you like the document to open in a new page or to appear in the page that is currently active? Opt to "Reuse existing page" if you prefer the latter. This setting will also ensure that items opened from the mail panel always open in one and the same page for mail.
Check the "Open new page next to active" option if you want new pages that you open to appear next to your current page on the page bar. By default, new pages will be placed at the right end of the page bar.
If you scroll using a mouse wheel, would you like Opera to jump directly to the point in the document you are scrolling to, or do you prefer seeing the document scroll smoothly into position? Enable smooth scrolling if you prefer the latter.
Page size and tooltips
The title bar is the bar at the very top of the Opera application window, which displays the title of your currently active page as well as Opera [version number]. If you would like it to display the current size of the active page before this information — for example if you have made a Web page and want to know how it plays out with different window sizes — check the "Show size" setting.
When you hover certain elements in Opera or on Web pages with your mouse, Opera displays small tooltips that add information about the element. If you do not want to see these tooltips, uncheck this option.
