Opera+Webkit meangons end of Opera for me. I was using it because it was independent from the mainstream "brown goo" that is served by Google and Apple. Also because it was pretty good with performance and had great features.

I suppose that features wont go away, that performance will be the same or slightly better for now. But with webkit as rendering engine it will be for Safari and Chrom what Maxton was for IE. Just another skin and some different features. I really, really doubt that Opera will gain market with this move. After all people do not care about the engine behind the browser. And Opera is still Opera. And not Chrome.

I used Opera since it got full free (8.5) and was loyal customer. Very loyal as I still use Opera after all those years on all my computers, for private and proffesional work. No more.

I do not want webkit Maxthon called Opera. I don't want to code for another IE-like shit screwing with standards. I will switch to Mozilla and Gecko as my professional browser. And if the rummors about Dragonfly are true - Opera is dead for me, frankly with it being webkit there will be no reason for me to use it at all. I can test the sites on Chrome as well.

    It really sucks.

    Exactly the same here

and no FreeBSD? chrome doesn't work on that platform officially, to my knowledge.

There is chromium port, albeit it uses non-vanilla sources which required significant amount of work from interested devs.

Ok, Opera moves to Blink forgetting its old features, I move to Maxthon. I advice all old Opera <15 addicts to try it, I am surprised by its capabilities

Back in 2000 I used MyIE2 (now called Maxthon), before I switched to Opera.

    Better try Fx. Or Chromium.

Sorry but Maxthon is better for me maybe because it is close to Opera and has unique features, innovatives and intergrated.I don't understand why you advice to use Chromium, OpKit is yet a Chromium clone. About Fx, if FirefoxOS is a failure, it will migrate to Webkit too so no much benefit.

AFAIK Mozilla won't migrate to WebKit. Anyway, the reason why I suggested those two browsers over Maxthon is mainly beacause Maxthon's UI lagginess. That's one thing that I can not stand. Plus the overall UI arrangement: all of the elements seem to be out of their place. I tried it a few (~2?) months ago, it was v4.* beta if I remember corectly and I don't think it has changed too much since then.

Though, Fx will sport Australis/UX on v25+ which is a downgrade from the current UI IMO, still, it remains the most customisable browser, now that Presto Opera development ceased.

Firefox 3.6 and Opera 10.10 were the pinnacle of browser GUIs, although for Opera I might be tempted to put it as early as the 9.2x era.* Every development since has been downhill at ever greater speeds toward Chromium, although luckily Opera 10.5x+ can still be customized to much the same extent. To get to the proper cookie-management dialog in Firefox, quite possibly one of its best default features, is only reachable by setting your history settings to custom since version 4. And I wouldn't be surprised if after doing their best to hide it, they'll proceed to remove it completely in some future version because it's "barely used".

    * The last version with detach window iirc. Then again, Escape to properly deselect might not have landed until 9.5 or 9.6…

I'm on Linux, so I couldn't use it regardless, but I imagine it probably matters a fair bit whether you have IE 8, 9, or 10?

UI is always great on Opera browsers but I expect more from Opera Next than I already see: Manual Update check, startup page options and a Resource Sniffer like Maxthon's. Plus, we need more useful extensions too.

"this is primarily an "under the hood" change" -- FALSE.. Now it's clear the old browser was dropped completely. M2 was removed beyond recovery, this is not something "under the hood". I won't even mention the uncountable smaller features *on the surface*.

"This will require no changes to your web development practices: keep coding to standards!" FALSE.. The web is being dominated by webkit now and there are two kinds of websites: those that work in webkit and those that don't. Exactly like during IE domination, nevermind the standards.

"Opera Extensions that you've built aren't obsolete" FALSE..

Opera employees have always been tight-lipped about future versions, but at least they didn't lie. Until now.
